Room 15 at Au Vieux Morvan Hotel may appear ordinary at first glance, but it holds a few surprises.
From 1946 onwards, François Mitterrand took a particular interest in the Château-Chinon region. At the time, he was a Member of Parliament for Nièvre. A special mention must be made of this historic room, where he stayed regularly from 1962 to 1981.
He stayed in room 15 of our hotel, looking out over the Morvan mountains that he loved so much. This relaxing yet enigmatic room recalls the simplicity of a restored monastic retreat. It was here that the destiny of a President, who would mark French history, partially unfolded.
“I have often understood France through Château-Chinon.” François Mitterrand.

A lasting connection with Château-Chinon
François Mitterrand had a deep and enduring affection for this region.
In March 1988, at the end of his first seven-year term, the President François Mitterrand unveiled the Fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely in Château-Chinon, which he commissioned. The artists who created the Stravinsky Fountain at Beaubourg in 1983 sought to exceed expectations.
The result is well worth a visit. You can admire the joyful creation by Niki de Saint Phalle – eight poetic mobiles with generous curves, timelessly naïve forms, and vibrant primary and secondary colours and motifs – just 300 metres from our hotel. Water and art burst forth and offering visitors a moment of raw authenticity.
Here is a feature from Le Monde about the President’s regular visits to our Au Vieux Morvan Hotel.
