In the footsteps of a great politician
François Mitterrand, a Member of Parliament for the Nièvre for 35 years, remained very attached to Chateau-Chinon and left his mark there. He regularly completed a 4.4 km circuit accessible to the whole family.

The stroll starts at the Place Notre Dame, where you can discover a map of the walk. The Porte Notre Dame, built in the 16th century, is made of stones from the old castle.
Take the Boulevard de la République, you will pass in front of our hotel Au vieux Morvan where François Mitterrand regularly stayed in room 15. When you arrive at Place Gudin, at the foot of the Freedom Tree, you will see the media library that was the Town Hall where François Mitterrand served as Mayor.

The must-see: Museums, the Calvaire and the Fountain
Taking Champlain street up to Saint-Christophe street, you will arrive at the Musée du Costume, a collection of some 5,000 exceptional items of traditional clothing from the 18th to the 20th centuries
Then installed in the former Sainte-Claire convent built in the 18th century, the Musée du Septennat opened in 1986, exhibits the official and personal gifts received by François Mitterrand, as part of his duties as President. You will see ceramics, glassware, silver and goldsmith's pieces, drawings, engravings, paintings, furniture and tapestries, illustrated photographs showing the prize-giving ceremony.
At the top of the city, you can admire the panorama, a superb 360° view of the Bazois plain and its surroundings.
Observe "the Calvaire" with its three Crosses of Missions, you will then cross the forest of Oak and Beech. You will arrive at the Esplanade François Mitterrand and its auditorium. Continuing towards the city centre, passing through the Faubourg de Paris, you can visit the Church of Saint Romain built in the 12th century.

And finally, passing by the rue de la Paix, you will reach Place François Mitterrand to enjoy the Monumental Fountain of Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely inaugurated in 1988.
